Teeth, through the course of a person’s life, often sustain painful damage that can affect their appearance and function. Restorative dentistry allows us to repair cracked, chipped, or decayed teeth, leaving them looking and feeling like new. Because restorations are made of durable metals or ceramics, they are as strong or stronger than natural tooth enamel, and last many years if properly taken care of. In addition, they can prevent the teeth from sustaining further damage. Dr. Manon Bourque-Hutchison serves patients from all over Florida, including Boca Raton and Broward County. Her practice offers dental crowns and bridges, dental implants, and dentures.
Dental crowns are coverings, made of porcelain or gold, that are bonded to the chewing surface of a tooth. They can be used to repair chips or cracks in the tooth enamel, and also in cases of extreme decay. Dental crowns allow the patient to bite, chew, and speak naturally, without the discomfort and awkwardness of a damaged tooth. They also improve the strength of the tooth, making it better able to withstand the formidable stress placed on the teeth when chewing, and keep the patient’s bite even and balanced.
The procedure starts with a thorough dental examination and patient consultation. Our staff will determine if a dental crown is the best option for you, and make sure to answer any questions you may have. We will then prepare the tooth to receive the dental crown, and take a mold of the tooth, or teeth, that have been damaged and send it to a lab where the restoration will be designed and milled. At your second appointment, we will securely attach the crown using dental cement. The procedure is usually painless, and patients walk out of our office with teeth that look and feel like their original ones. Our practice, located close to Boca Raton in Broward County, offers dental crowns of the highest quality, and our patients report great satisfaction with them.
Dental bridges are essentially replacement teeth anchored by crowns on the natural teeth on either side of them. Usually made of porcelain bonded to metal, they allow the patient to have a natural bite, even after losing one or more teeth. Also, these restorations can be made with different shades of porcelain, making them nearly unnoticeable to others. Dental bridges have the added benefit of preventing the patient’s natural teeth from shifting to fill the gap created by the missing one. They are also a faster, easier alternative to dental implants, requiring much less time to complete and a less-invasive procedure.
The process of receiving dental bridges is similar to that of dental crowns. We start out, again, with an examination and patient consultation, and prepare the teeth for the procedure. After having the bridge milled at the lab, we prepare the teeth on either side of the gap to receive the restoration. The dental bridge is then secured by cementing the crowns on either side; the entire procedure can usually be done without anesthetic, though the teeth may be sensitive for a few days afterward. By practicing proper dental care, many of our patients, from Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and Broward County, report that their dental bridges last many years.
Dentures are prosthetic teeth not permanently fixed to the jaw – though they look just like natural teeth, they can be taken out at any time. Dentures are often the best choice when there are multiple teeth missing, or when the existing teeth are not strong enough to support dental crowns or bridges. There are several options for dentures available as well: full dentures cover all of either the top or bottom teeth, while partial dentures are available for those who are just missing a few teeth. Dentures can be made of hardened plastic or porcelain, depending on patient preference, and can be a less-expensive alternative to dental implants. Dentures are also easy to maintain, and can last for years with proper care.
Dental implants are replacement teeth that are permanently fixed to the jaw with titanium screws. They look and feel like natural teeth, and are extremely durable. The unique properties of titanium allow it to bond with the jawbone, though it often takes months for this to happen. Similar in function to dental bridges, implants allow the patient to eat, brush, and talk normally. Because the replacement teeth can be matched to the natural teeth with different shades of porcelain, patients report that their dental implants are nearly undetectable to others.
