There are many reasons that people visit their dentist. Some people go to the dentist to get a routine cleaning and check-up. Other people visit our Broward County cosmetic dentistry office to make their teeth brighter and whiter. One topic that comes up quite a bit, though, regardless why a patient comes to visit our office, is bad breath. Yes, the dreaded dragon breath I something we’re all concerned about and that we all want to avoid. It can be a real sore source of embarrassment and self-consciousness for some people.

Thankfully, though, there are ways to avoid bad breath. Some of them simple, others are maybe more involved.

For one, it’s of the utmost important that you brush and floss regularly. Since most cases of bad breath are caused by bacteria in the mouth, keeping your mouth clean and fresh is one good way of eliminating that bacteria and hence reducing the possibility of bad breath. The teeth aren’t the only culprit, however. It’s a good idea to invest in a tongue scraper as well since a lot of bacteria can be found on the tongue.

Gum disease and gingivitis can also cause bad breath, and these issues can be taken care of through regular dental hygiene. Advanced gum disease, however, will need advanced dental care to remedy it.

Another important consideration is to keep some chewing gum or breath mints on you. While this won’t eliminate bad breath entirely, it can help mask the bad breath and reduce it a great deal.

There are certain health conditions involving the throat, lungs, stomach, and other body parts that may affect your breath as well. These are the sorts of issues that will require more advanced medical treatment and diagnostics.
